Chinatown Summer Nights

cultural planning

Client: Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles (CRA/LA)

Project Time Frame: 2009 - 2010

Event Dates: Every Saturday, August 2010, 5 pm - Midnight

Beginning in the fall of 2009, Community Arts Resources (CARS) began work with the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles (CRA/LA), as well as with a select group of community stakeholders from Chinatown, to develop a cultural plan for the implementation of a summer series that would help to bring back the excitement of Chinatown and re-brand Chinatown as an exciting hotspot for Angelenos. Part food event, part summer night party, Chinatown Summer Nights attracted thousands of Angelenos from across the county to taste the many culinary offerings of Chinatown and LA’s gourmet food trucks, sample the neighborhood’s wares, experience large‐scale public art, sip on Chinese beer, dance in Central Plaza with KCRW DJs and take part in Chinese cultural, hands‐on workshops presented by local organizations and museums. With extensive community outreach and engagement efforts, CARS successfully stimulated economic growth, drew thousands to a landmark neighborhood and created a sustaining annual, cultural, community celebration. CARS’ marketing and branding strategy for Chinatown Summer Nights is detailed in the Marketing Section.
